If you have a rising kindergartner at home and you live in Wake County, it's time to start thinking about kindergarten,

The new school choice assignment plan has sped up the usual process of registering for school and applying for the magnet program this year.

Pre-enrollment for new students and rising kindergartners began on Monday, Nov. 28.

Parents of rising kindergartners can enroll their child at any nearby elementary school. Parents of students new to the system may register at the nearest grade-appropriate school for their child. Click here for details. A parent or guardian will need a child's birth certificate, proof of address (such as a current electric bill) and a photo ID of the parent or guardian. It took me about 20 minutes when I registered my older daughter two years ago.
If you plan on applying for one of Wake's many magnet schools, you must pre-enroll before you can participate in the magnet school selection process. That opens up on Dec. 5 when parents can complete an online application. Click here for more details and the magnet school application.

Rising kindergartners and new students also will need to pre-enroll so they can participate in the new school choice selection process. The first round begins Jan. 17.
