The Orange County-based Transactors Improv Company, the oldest active improvisational theater in the South, is adding a new show for families to its schedule.
Transactors Improv: For Families! is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. It's a new show for The ArtsCenter, though not for Transactors. The company has been busy performing to about 1,400 students at schools across the region this fall.

"Besides all of the inquiries we’ve had in the past about whether our shows are appropriate for kids, it was doing all of the school shows earlier this fall that inspired us to add “Transactors for Families” to our schedule," co-director Nancy Pekar tells me. "Having introduced all these kids to improv - which they loved, by the way - it just made sense to include something age appropriate in our line-up."

Transactors' typical shows tend to be PG-13 or even R rated, Pekar said.

"This show will be totally kid friendly," said Pekar, a mom of a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old. "As a parent of young children, I’m really looking forward to having them be able to see me perform."

The 45-minute show of short-form improv features pieces made up on the spot. Short-form improv, Pekar tells me, means they perform individual scenes that run anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes long. Each one is its own separate piece and based on suggestions from the audience.

Pekar hopes the the long Thanksgiving weekend will be an ideal time for the show. By Saturday evening, extended families might be ready to get out of the house. And, as a mom I appreciate this, they were thoughtful about the start time. Pekar said the show's length means people will be out the door by about 7 p.m. before most younger kids begin to fall apart.

If the show proves popular, Transactors will add more to the line-up at The ArtsCenter. They also will be doing some kid-friendly shows at Common Ground Theatre in Durham, billed as TAFFY: Transactors for Families. The first one is 11 a.m., March 10.
Saturday's show will feature Pekar, Anoo Brod and Dan Sipp. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 the day of for the general public and $5 in advance or $8 the day of for students and seniors. Click here for details and tickets.
