For the past several years, Johnston Community College Performing Arts has brought in theater companies from around the country to offer children's performances.

Here's what's on the schedule for this season:

  • 7 p.m., Nov. 18. "Cinderella." Birmingham Children’s Theatre presents the classic tale. Imagine living with two bossy stepsisters and a grouchy stepmother who makes you do all the housework...yuck! Cinderella has it tough, but she does the work without complaint and with a smile on her face. In this timeless story, Cinderella’s kindness, hard work, and selflessness help her overcome the obstacles she faces. Children will giggle and shout as they help the Prince find the perfect foot for the magical glass slipper! The 50-minute musical is recommended for preschoolers to first graders. Tickets are $11 in advance and $12.50 at the door. Click here for details and to buy tickets.
  • 3 p.m., Feb. 19. "Are You My Mother?" presented by ArtsPower National Touring Theatre. At long last, Baby Bird emerges from her shell and expects to be greeted by her mother's song. But her mother is not there. Where is she? Why isn't she home? With the help of Dog, Cat, and Hen, Baby Bird sets out in search of Mother Bird in this colorful musical adventure based on P.D. Eastman’s whimsical and well-loved picture book. This 55-minute musical is recommended for kids in kindergarten to second grade. Tickets are $11 in advance and $12.50 at the door. • 3 p.m., March 17. "SkippyJon Jones." SkippyJon Jones is a little kitten with big ears and even bigger dreams! Sometimes he pretends to be a bird, sometimes he pretends to be a llama, and sometimes he pretends to be a whale… Anything BUT a Siamese cat! Based on the book by Judy Schachner, and from the creators of Theatreworks USA’s Junie B. Jones and Click, Clack, Moo, Skippyjon Jones is an enchanting musical about unleashing your powerful imagination and following your dreams. This 60-minute musical is recommended for kids in kindergarten to third grade. Tickets are $11 in advance and $12.50 at the door. Click here for details and to buy tickets.

Season tickets are on sale for $30 each. The performances are at the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, which is just off Interstate 95 in Smithfield.

I'm adding this to our 2011-12 Children's Series page, where you'll find more information about other performances for kids and families in the region.
