2011-12 Children's Series: The ArtsCenter in Carrboro

The ArtsCenter in Carrboro has been a favorite stop for acclaimed children's artists. Here is who is on the schedule so far for the season.

The SuperFun series at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro has long been a favorite stop for acclaimed children's performers. And this season is no different.

The folks over at The ArtsCenter are still working to finalize the season. They are planning to add shows for February, May and June. And I'll update as soon as I hear about those.

But here's what's on the schedule now:

11 a.m., Nov. 12: Elizabeth Mitchell will make a stop in Carrboro on her first tour of the southeast with her music for family audiences. Mitchell, a Smithsonian Folkways Artist, plays inspiring and uplifting music. She also co-founder of the indie rock band Ida. Mitchell, who has performed and recorded family music since her days as a preschool teacher in New York, has released four albums of children’s music including last year's acclaimed "Sunny Day." According to NPR, Mitchell’s music is “some of the most uplifting kids music out there…[Mitchell is] without a doubt a kindie rock star.” Tickets are $10 for youth and $12 for adults. Kids 2 and under are admitted free. A family four pack is available for $40.
11 a.m., Jan 21: One of my favorites, Gustafer Yellowgold is back, with his tales of life on the sun and now Minnesota. Actually, singer/songwriter/artist/creator Morgan Taylor sings some incredibly mellow songs that tell the story of Gustafer, a little guy from the sun who likes to jump on cake and has a pet eel, among other things. Taylor sings about Gustafer's adventures while his drawings are displayed on a big screen. This appeals to little kids and tweens and teens. I know it sounds odd, but I highly recommend it. Tickets are $8 for youth, $10 for adults and $32 for a family four pack. Kids 2 and under are admitted free.
11 a.m. March 31: Animals come to life in Animalia by Hobey Ford's Golden Rod Puppets. Two-time winner of puppetry’s highest honor, the UNIMA Citation of Excellence, and a three-time recipient of Jim Henson Foundation grants, Hobey Ford is a skilled and respected artist whose work is considered innovative in the field. Tickets are $7 for youth, $9 for the general public and $28 for a family four pack. Kids 2 and under are admitted free.
11 a.m., April 28: In celebration of Earth Day, Farmer Jason will sing about everything from animals in the forest to a day on the farm. With songs about a punk rock skunk, a guitar pickin’ chicken, a butterfly, or a tractor, Farmer Jason has received much acclaim including a Parents’ Choice Gold Award, as well as an Emmy for Best Children’s Program from Nashville Public Television. In his other life, Farmer Jason (AKA Jason Ringenberg) pioneered the fusion of punk rock and country with Jason and the Scorchers in the mid-1980s. Tickets are $7 for youth, $9 for adults and $28 for a family four pack. Kids 2 and under are admitted free.
