The children's staff at Quail Ridge Books & Music shared these fun Thanksgiving books for kids.
Here's what they recommend:
- "Balloons Over Broadway," by Melissa Sweet is the true story of the puppeteer of the Macy's Parade. Ever wonder about those huge inflated puppets that bob their way down the street for the Thanksgiving Day parade? Melissa Sweet tells the fascinating story of their creation by Tony Sarg, an ingenious puppeteer, along with the history of the parade itself. Her trademark watercolor and collage illustrations are equally ingenious, and are full of engaging details. Ages 4-8.
- In "Amelia Bedelia Talks Turkey," by Herman Parish, the delightfully funny twister of the English language volunteers to help a class put on their Thanksgiving pageant. This is a class play no one will ever forget. Who says turkeys can't fly? An easy reader, for ages 6 and up.
- "The Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving" by Jessica Gunderson captures the troubles of the colonists, and their early friendship with the Native Americans in simple, child-friendly illustrations. Get ready for some myth busting about that first Turkey Day, too! Ages 5 and up.
