Lynda Loveland: The emulsifier

The eating habits of my kids can be summed up in a word or two.

My son is now known as the wood chipper. He stuffs handfuls of food in his mouth with a quarter of it spurting out the sides. He walked across the soccer field last weekend eating Pringles and, I’m not kidding you, he left a trail of chips behind him. I purposely made a point of looking because of the way he was eating. Big chunks of chips behind him. You could have followed him for a good 50 feet or so.

Anyway, back to the emulsifier. That would be my four-year-old daughter Carys. She’s my pickiest eater. She eats a big breakfast and lunch but doesn’t really buy into the whole dinner thing. So to bide her time at the table, she chews and chews and chews some more. She’ll keep a piece of food in her mouth for 10 minutes! Unbelievable how long she can chew her food! By the time she’s ready to swallow, it’s reduced to the consistency of stage one baby food! She could STILL be the face of Gerber foods! Guuuuross!! I realize it’s probably helping her digestion, but come on! Eat it already!

I’m trying to think of the right description for my oldest daughter. Look for that next week.

Oh boy. Deja vu. Your "wood chipper" describes my son. It was funny and cute when he was little. Be forewarned. He'll soon be a growing 15 year old consuming vast quantities. You'll be following that one with a shop-vac!

hahahahahaha!!! love it! because of your earlier post about your "wood chipper," that's what we affectionately call our 6 year old son- he eats the exact same way- and loves to eat, too, so we also call him "jethro." my oldest son (13) is definitely an "emulsifier," as well! he is so picky, he tries to convince us he's eating his supper by chewing the whole time. my 3 year old daughter is going to have to be nicknamed the "spreader"-- she loves most foods we give her, but somehow they all get spread around the plate, her face, and on the tabletop! :)

Just want you to know that I did the same thing as a child with the chewing. Drove my mother crazy also!!!! I think I turned out fine, but I also had major problems with my tonsils so it might be something to think about or have checked.

Lynda - my daughter (now 15yrs old) used to be the exact same way. She was picky and she would chew food (especially meat) FOREVER!! Drove me crazy! One time, she was about 5yrs old, I took her to the doctor for a completly unrelated issue and the Nurse Practioner said that her tonsils were quite large and suggested I take her to an ENT. Sure enough, the tonsils were diagnosed as HUGE and removed. Her picky eating/chewing stopped! She was actually having trouble swallowing because of the tonsils. Doc said we usually think of tonsil removal because of infections, which my daughter didn't have, but size can be a problem too. I'm not saying that your daughter has the same thing, but it wouldn't hurt to mention it to the doctor and have them check it out. Now my daughter eats just about anything and chews normally. Good luck!
