2011-12 Children's Series: Cary Arts Center

The new Cary Arts Center has allowed the town to expand its performance offerings for kids.

Cary can offer more live performances for kids thanks to the new Cary Arts Center, which opened earlier this year.

The town has added three family-friendly concerts to its long-running Marvelous Music Series. So I'll highlight these performances as part of Go Ask Mom's series on this season's children's performances across the Triangle.

Here's what's scheduled at the Cary Arts Center:

Grey Seal Puppets present Tangle of Tales, 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 13. Three favorite folktales from around the world come to life with a touch of the familiar and a taste of the new. Using a variety of puppet styles, "The Frog Prince" from Germany, "Three Billy Goats Gruff" from Scandinavia and "The Three Little Pigs" from England are each told with refreshing wit and wisdom. In between each of the tales, there’s a whole menagerie of zany characters to see and enjoy. Tangle of Tales is fun for everyone!
Storyteller Donna Washington, 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 19. The author, award-winning storyteller and multicultural folklorist has been sharing stories with audiences for over twenty years. Her amazing vocal pyrotechnics and dynamic physicality make her stories come alive and enthrall and delight audiences from four to one hundred and four. Donna presents a wide range of tales from many different cultures — Korean stories, Greek and Celtic myths, African folktales, Arthurian legends, English lore, American folk heroes, Halloween stories, holiday stories and more! She has been featured at the National Storytelling Festival and numerous festivals, schools and libraries across the country.
Tarradiddle Players present Rapunzel, 7:30 p.m., Sunday, March 25. Adapted by renowned playwright Max Bush, this production stays true to the mystery and enchantment of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Theo and Helga long for a child of their own, as does Gothal, the powerful witch who lives next door. When Gothal catches Theo stealing from her walled garden, she forces him to give her his first-born daughter, who she names Rapunzel. Imprisoned in a tower, Rapunzel spends her lonely days longing for companionship — until she meets the charming Prince Derrick. The young couple must rely on their love and courage to overcome the witch’s power.
