Redhanded Design offers sewing camps, programs, parties for kids

Tracy Turney was in her twenties, living in San Francisco, when she took her first sewing class.
She quickly grew to love the pastime, getting up to sew even before she went to work. In fact, the store where she took that first class eventually hired her because she'd taken so many of the classes.
"It started a new love of mine and now it's a career," she tells me. Redhanded Design offers sewing programs, camps for kids
Turney, a mom of two, started creating her own handbags a few years ago. It was a hobby at first, but when people started asking her where she got them, she started selling them. Today, her bags, made with eco-friendly products and faux leather, are sold at boutiques across the country.
Last year, Turney and her husband decided they wanted to play a bigger role in the community. They opened Redhanded Design Studio in Apex to offer sewing and design services - from slip covers to sports bags - and programs and camps. Redhanded Design Studio also offers a variety of camps for kids, along with birthday parties, and programs for adults. The programs for kids are designed for ages 9 to 11 and 12 to 14. Kids can make everything from stuffed animals and monster bags to dog beds.
"I just love creating different things," she tells me. "I love helping the kids see how much they love it."
