Consignment sale teams up with 5K to raise money, food for hungry kids

Lullabies to Mudpies consignment sale this weekend in Wake Forest is working with The Buddy Run to support Backpack Buddies.

Most children's consignment sales in the region support charities. Some donate unsold clothes and toys to nonprofits, for instance. Others donate a portion of profits. In other words, lots of moms are helping out a lot of people in our region.

Lullabies to Mudpies, a new children's consignment sale in Wake Forest, has a unique twist on all this charitable activity. The sale is partnering with a fundraising event to raise money for Backpack Buddies, a local program providing food to kids who otherwise wouldn't have it over the weekend.

The sale is collecting food and money for the program, letting shoppers get into the sale early on Thursday if they bring $14 worth of food or a $14 gift card to a grocery store or big box store. Backpack Buddies needs food that children can open and fix on their own. That includes single-serve pop-top ravioli cups, juice boxes, self stable milk boxes, granola bars, raisins and tuna packets.

But in addition to that, Lullabies to Mudpies also has teamed up with The Buddy Run, an annual 5K and fundraiser for Backpack Buddies, which will start and end at Heritage View Clubhouse on Friday evening during the sale's shopping hours.

There will be lots of families at the clubhouse for The Buddy Run (making this pairing a great idea for both the sale and the run). The Buddy Run includes a two-mile Roller Run, a one-mile Family Walk, the Itty Bitty Buddy Dash, and a 5K chip-timed run. They'll also have a bounce house for the kids and Kona Ice, along with other family fare.

Lena Gott and Valerie Bolick, friends and former co-workers, tell me that everything fell in place as they planned the sale. Gott and Bolick each have two young children. Gott has shopped at consignment sales for years and says her kids rarely wear new clothes now.

"I've always wanted to start one," Gott tells me. "It just all came together."
