St. Paul's Center for Hope and Healing, a ministry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cary, offers a variety of free workshops and programs for parents. Many are coming up in the next month or so.

Here's what's scheduled:

  • Bullying Discussion and Workshop, 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., Sept. 21. Verbal harassment. Physical assault. Emotional abuse. Many elementary, middle and high school students face this type of treatment at the hands of their peers every day. From negative interactions at school to hateful messages online, bullying has a detrimental impact on the self esteem of teenagers who often struggle — sometimes in secret — to cope with the pain of these encounters. All too often, these youth feel they have no hope of getting past the torment. Parents and kids are encouraged to attend this session, which will discuss how to handle bullying and explore ways to overcome the emotional suffering that is often associated with it. For more information, contact Ruth Echols at rkechols@hotmail.com or 919-469-1477, ext. 12.
  • Emotionally and Intellectually Nurturing Your Children, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 19. Led by returning instructor Dr. Kristen Wynns, this parenting seminar will review ways to enhance your child’s emotional intelligence, ideas for improving your child’s self esteem and self confidence, how to discipline and correct behavior without emotionally harming your child, easy tips for stimulating your child intellectually (beyond reading to them), ways to stimulate and encourage your child’s natural curiosity and talents. The seminar also aims to guide parents in helping their children find their passion. Contact Juli Kirby at chh@stpaulscary.org or 919-621-3825 for more information.
  • Special Needs Resources, 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., Sept. 20. Designed for families and individuals with special needs, we will use this session to facilitate discussions of disorders such as ADHD, Asperger’s, autism and learning disabilities and share an overview of resources available to help. Families may share their own experiences. The idea of forming a support group will be explored if there is interest. Contact Juli Kirby at chh@stpaulscary.org or 919-621-3825 for information.
  • Optimism Unraveled: How Positive Thinking Can Make Us Happier, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 5. Is your glass half full or half empty? Some people feel that thinking positively is beneficial, but some people assume that optimists are simply being unrealistic. Where does the truth lie? In this seminar, Sarah Atai, LCSW, will explore what it really means to think positively, the research-based benefits of optimism and how you can change negative thought patterns to help enhance your well being and increase your happiness. Contact Juli at chh@stpaulscary.org or 919-621-3825 for details.
These are all free, though donations are accepted and appreciated. Registration is required. To register, complete the registration form at chh.stpaulscary.org, email chh@stpaulscary.org or call Juli at 919-621-3825
