For families, the festival offers a series of three children's Saturday matinees. These one-hour performances are designed for kids and are each followed by a free kids' party in the Durham Performing Art Center's lobbies.

The annual festival is kind of like a smaller scale State Fair with rides, games and exhibits. Consider it a good way to get a taste of the big event and a great opportunity for a trial run if you have younger kids who haven't been to the fair before (which is set for Oct. 17 to Oct. 27 this year).
