Kid-friendly events fill the Triangle this Saturday, Feb. 21. Whether you live Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Knightdale, Pittsboro or Hillsborough, you'll find everything from a new science exhibit on health to a guided tour of the brain by a neuroscientist to a revolutionary war reenactment. There's also a free showing of Charlotte Web with free popcorn, a free "Little Red Riding Hood" play, a free event to get your child fingerprinted (with crafts, refreshments and a mascot visit) and a folk arts show! If you're still trying to get your kids into the habit of washing their hands before meals and buckling up in the car, your job just got a little easier. A new permanent exhibit opening Saturday at Durham’s Life and Science Museum teaches kids the science behind health issues, such as hand washing, crashes and stress.
The museum's new 2,600-square-foot exhibit features interactive activity centers, and the museum’s staff will be on hand to help kids with experiments. Your child can use microscope to study live dust mites, a common cause of allergies. He or she can see which spots tend to be missed in hand washing and understand how washing removes. Over in Chapel Hill on Saturday, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center offers families an opportunity to join neuroscientist Gary Duncan on an exploration of the human brain. Kids can compare the structure of their own brain to that of a sheep, mouse, and bee while discovering how the human brains evolved. Kids will also find out how the activity of neurons responds to caffeine and other drugs. It’s free. No registration required for the sessions at 12:30 p.m and 1:30 p.m.
In Raleigh, kids 2 to 10 can take in a “Charlotte’s Web,” a free movie at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Oak View County Park, at 4028 Carya Dr., Raleigh. Enjoy the free popcorn and lemonade. Afterward, see the park's new exhibit, "Farm Life: A Century of Change for Farm Families and their Neighbors" and take a guided tour. Meanwhile, in Hillsborough on Saturday, you can travel back in time more than 200 years as Revolutionary War Living History Day comes to life from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Alexander Dickson House (ca 1790), at 150 E. King St. Watch as Continental, British and militia reenactors demonstrate camp life during the Revolutionary War and commemorate General Cornwallis’ encampment in Hillsborough in February 1781. Events include marching drills, musket-firing demonstrations, open-flame cooking, and guided tours (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) of Hillsborough’s colonial and Revolutionary War sites. In Cary on Saturday, the SearStone continuing care retirement community invite the public to a free Child ID Event presented in conjunction with the Cary Police Department from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Besides digital fingerprinting provided by the police, and there will be crafts for kids, refreshments and a visit from McGruff the Cary police mascot. The event will be held at the SearStone Information Centre, located at 106 Walker Stone Drive in Cary, off Davis Drive just south of the intersection with High House Road.
