Octuplets' Mom Not Right Target

It’s hard to miss the news about a mother giving birth to octuplets, adding on to her family of six children. But lately some news has turned downright ugly. When Nadya Suleman gave birth, we saw images of the team of doctors who helped all eight babies survive and pondered the wonder of medical technology. Lately though, we hear that the octuplets’ mom has been receiving death threats, which have sparked a Los Angeles police department investigation.

From the moment I first discovered that the mother already had six children, it was clear to me that we were reading about a mother who was some experiencing some sort of mental trouble, and I’m not expert in that field. I think we would do better to focus on the system that allowed a mother to conceive eight children—I’m talking about a doctor who implanted too many embryos and an unregulated fertilization industry that let this happen. I believe what it boils down to is greed for fame and money.

Meanwhile, 14 children are growing up in a world that feels bitterly about them. I understand that California taxpayers are concerned that a big share of the financial burden of raising Suleman’s 14 kids could fall on them, and California is suffering financially. But I think public furor should not affect the innocents, whether they are babies or people who are not well.

Let’s make changes instead so that doctors aren’t allowed to make this happen again. Let’s do it for the sake of society and those parents who have waited patiently through fertility treatments and played by unspoken ethical rules. I know. I have a friend who tried for years to have children and went through much agony before deciding to adopt two. They’re now teenagers who love their adoptive mom and dad.

If you’re trying to decide whether to have a second child, read Carolina Parent’s article, “
Are You Ready for a Second Baby?”

Dead wrong. No one is hostile towards these kids; but the anger directed toward this woman is wholly deserved. I don't think you or the average politician understands how deeply angry the general tax-paying public is about having their salaries appropriated for the raising of children whose selfish mothers intentionally get pregnant with no jobs or income. The doctor should be prosecuted; but mom needs a charge of welfare fraud.

Unfortunately, the problem is that people get used to the gov't paying for the kids they pop out and can't take care of. They just have more because it means more money. To cut off assistance means making the kids suffer, and most people don't want to see that. I say we start programs where, if you need government help, that's fine. You have a year to get your stuff together. With this program, how about job training and placement? Get people some skills to get out and work. After a year, you're on your own, regardless. And if you choose to get pregnant, you're on your own. If you need to be supported by the gov't, you don't need to be having kids. We need to make that clear. Of course, there will never be a happy medium.

Here's food for thought: A woman who's on Medicaid is eligible for a free IUD. I wonder why that is, and I wonder why more people don't take advantage of it.

1) Death threats are a RIDICULOUS solution to the problem and the people making them should be held criminally liable. 2) We have to be careful when we suggest that there should be regulations on fertility treatments. If a family is financially able to take care of 14 children, then they should be able to have that many if they desire it. If we are not careful here, we are going to end up with a government telling us that we can not have more than 2 children per household as they do in other countries. There are people that have many children (I had a friend from a family of 10 kids. They were able to take care of their kids without government aid.) In my opinion, we should have the restrictions on how many kids the GOVERNMENT is willing to pay for. If you require government financial assistance and have kids that you can not afford, then that should be a form of abuse and should be subject to child abuse standards. Bet they would stop having them!!

Why should her children be taken away from her? Yes it was idiotic that she tried to have more children when she couldn't afford the ones she already has, but how often does that happen.. on a daily basis. How many women are receiving financial assistance from the government and continue to have kids.

The doctor never should have implanted so many eggs that is the bottom line. She obviously had the money for it, I am sure he would not have done it for free unless it was to get rid of the kook.

For what ever reason she wanted that many kids, no they should be her problem. The state of California will have to help pay for them but why should the state raise them?

Bottom line... it is posts and articles such as these that are doing exactly what she and the doctor want... getting her publicity! The possible outcome; MULTIPLE children was a side effect that they took into consideration but never actually worried about. Looks like it boiled down to, "The more the merrier" for this woman.

No the children shouldn't suffer, but at what point do you step in? I don't believe in abortion either, but she she never have been allowed to go through the procedure to begin with.

" I think we would do better to focus on the system that allowed a mother to conceive eight children—I’m talking about a doctor who implanted too many embryos and an unregulated fertilization industry that let this happen. I believe what it boils down to is greed for fame and money."

What has happened to personal responsibility????

You are right, it is for fame and greed. But it is the MOTHER that applies to.

Ok then... whether she is mentally disturbed or milking the system - those kids should be elsewhere.

If you're not an expert on mental health, how can you know she is ill and not seeking more welfare dollars?

"Meanwhile, 14 children are growing up in a world that feels bitterly about them."

Exactly wrong.

I can not agree with death threats - but her children should be taken from her. She, SO OBVIOUSLY, can not take care of them... and I don't mean just financially. This chick is so emotionally disturbed, it's not even funny.
