Facebook decides what's obscene about breastfeeding

It’s nearly 2009, but apparently life has not improved that much for women when it comes to breastfeeding. The social networking site Facebook has removed photos that show too much of a mother’s breast while feeding her baby so that the site remains safe and secure for all users, including kids, Reuters reports.

"Photos containing a fully exposed breast (as defined by showing the nipple or areola) do violate those terms (on obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit material) and may be removed," a Facebook spokesman said in a statement, Reuters reports. Some users are angry about the ban—including the American mom whose photo was removed by Facebook—and have launched an online protest dubbed, “Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!”

It strikes me as odd that Facebook is attempting to protect kids from seeing the most natural of life’s functions—a baby eating. For many years, it has been generally recognized that breastfeeding is best for baby, yet it’s a life act fraught with taboo. As a mom, it’s hard enough to breastfeed (sore nipples and exhaustion) without having to worry that someone thinks you’re doing something obscene. By the way, why is it that men’s nipples aren’t considered obscene?

It still isn’t easy to find places to breastfeed in private, although I believe things have improved somewhat in that respect over the past decade or two. I remember my sister working in Manhattan 15 years ago would have to sneak into a restroom (ugghhh) to pump her milk as she didn’t have a private office. Invariably, someone would come knocking on the door, heightening the tension as she tried to think those pleasant thoughts that made milk flow.

Since then, I’ve breastfed in public during baseball games and even checked with a priest if it was OK to do so in church during my baby's baptism. The answer was yes. But evidently there remains a reluctance to accept the female breast for what it is: Not just a sexual object, but also the purest form of a mother’s nurture.

IMO posters loose all credibility when they compare some bodily functions to breastfeeding. It is of course simply feeding one's child. I nursed each of my children and am a big fan because of the benefits, both nutrionally and emotionally. That said, I am also a big fan of modesty and I have been in the company of women who have stripped to the waist to nurse, not all concerned with discretion, etc. So, while nursing is certainly not obscene, I think it is perfectly fine for Facebook or a similar site to set a standard.

Sorry, but I don't feel like Facebook is deeming breastfeeding obscene. I didn't see the pic removed. There's nothing wrong with keeping the site clean of an exposed female breast that can be interpreted incorrectly.

I breastfed for almost two years. I had enough common sense to keep it private while in public.

Please have consideration for the majority of people who do not want to see someone breast feeding in public. Yeah it is natural, but so is going to the bathroom and taking a shower. Modesty is the best way to behave.

Well folks breastfeeding infants is natural. NO, I don't want to look at your breast, hear suckling sounds, etc. while I'm eating. Defecating is natural too. That doesn't mean you can do it anywhere you please. Have some respect and hope to get some.

First I would like to say - why is verything is the fault of the male in our society. Second as a male I could care less if a female wants to walk around with out a shirt and and let her breasts hang out. Third as it relates to breast feeding my wife breast feed two of our three children and there is nothing wrong with the act of breast feeding however in breast feeding along with bottle feeding in my opinion the problem is when do you say enough with either breast feeding or bottle feeding a child. Those women that were on FaceBook breast feeding two and three year olds or older kids in my opinion have carried it alittle beyond what is normal. My children were drinking from cups when the were two years old. Some are comparing breasting feeding to violence - how do you compare the two in my opinion parents should monitor their childrens shows - we did and we keep violence blocked so they could not watch it until the were old enough to understand - how old is that it is up to the parent

If they are out there to see then everybody should look, then maybe the mother will find a more suitable place.

Poo-ing and having sex are also "natural". That doesn't mean they need to be done in public.

Only in America is breastfeeding (and nudity in general) considered obscene while an unlimited amount of violence and gore is OK for kids to see.

I'll never forget that they pulled a videogame off of store shelves a few years ago... called Grand Theft Auto where you could kill police, bystanders, and basically be a terrorist. The funny thing is that it wasn't banned for the wanton violence... it was because if you found a secret area you could see nudity.

God forbid you should feed your child as it's been done since the beginning of our species without it being considered obscene!

I am all for breastfeeding. But you can do it discretly. Have a little blanket in the diaper bag to throw over your shoulder and cover up a bit. I have a cousin whos wife will just pop it out anywhere, in front of her father in law, my 3 teenaged brothers, and never make an effort to be the least bit modest. She'll burp the baby and just let it hang out. I have no problem with anyone doing it in public, and they should not have to run to the bathroom to feed a poor hungry baby, but at least cover up a bit.

I think that breastfeeding is the best gift you can give to your baby. I am a very private mom and I do not breastfeed in public. I don't have a problem with moms that are comfortable breastfeeding in public. I wish that more people were accepting and open to the idea of breastfeeding.
