Yes, it's hot, but it could be worse!

As a former Florida resident and one who ultimately fled the heat, I am having awful flashbacks thanks to this record heat wave.

The inability to breathe and the feeling that my skin is being cooked and my hair is on fire is quite familiar, and I can't say that the memories are fond ones.

As I sat inside with my daughters pretty much all day on Sunday, it made me realize that I allowed myself to be a slave to the heat in South Florida.

That epiphany did not send me outdoors however, BUT it did make me realize that extreme heat is okay in small doses.

Because, now that I've lived here in North Carolina for more than a year, I have fond memories of beautiful fall weather, low humidity and even scattered snow flurries. So, I know that this too shall pass.

Is it hot? Yes. But it could be worse. Trust me.

You could be a slave to the heat for seven months out of the year, down in South Florida. And believe me, there is no fun in that.

FL definitely has the humidity levels we have -- and more! And the humidity is the big key, too. After the better part of a decade in west Texas, I can tell you with certainty that a temperature of 105 beats the pants off a heat index of 105 every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

pikemom: Fl doesn't have humidity levels like we have?!?!?! Where you were in Fl might make a difference. South FL near the coast is totally and complelety miserable. Air so thick that... wow just indredibly thick. Don't mean to question you- but I remember the humidity and the heat vividly...

Is it hot? Yes. But it could be worse.

I guess you are correct if you believe there is a Hades.Plus Florida does not have the humidity levels we have .Been there done that too.

i call this a "blizzard" in the summer. when a winter blizzard in the northeast strikes, you don't go outside much. same here with extreme heat. overall, weather in n.c. is beautiful! mild winters, nice spring and fall temps!

Coming from Florida myself... Most people seemed surprised when I tell them that Florida RARELY sees temperatures in the 100s - maybe twice a year, if at all.

Last summer here in Raleigh, I think we had 14 consecutive days of temps above the century mark.

Right now, I am not able to discern a difference... It's ridiculously hot out there!

I am just the opposite, I came from Michigan serveral years ago to get away from the snow and cold. I love the heat. And have found ways to help keep my home cool. I use an evaporative roof cooling system that drops the temperture of the roof 50 to 70 degrees, saving me around 30% in cooling costs, I also tinted all of windows with Limo Black window film and then installed additional doors to separate half the house. No need to cool rooms that are not used. Enjoy the heat!! Just know how to tame it!!

Angela- I am right there with you. I am a native Floridian. Born and parcially raised in Lake Worth (outskirts of West Palm). I've been in NC for 20 years but I still remember South FL heat and humidity. Yes- this week has been dreadful, but I will gladly take a few miserable weeks here and there any day over an August and September in Fl. Welcome to NC.
