Potty Training Update

The Spiderman, spiderweb sticker reward poster thing, was a huge......disappointment.  Caiden got several little stickers for going #1 on the toilet.  Not a single big sticker for going #2.  He just keeps going in his underwear.  One night, we woke up to find him with his diaper off and poo spread around his room!  Nothing says good morning, like the sight and scent of your son's excrement spread around his room!

A lot of you posted great ideas for potty training.  I've tried several of them in the past.  The commando thing turned out to be a bad idea.  He pulled the sprinkler move in the living room across the fireplace, tv and wall.  Not long after, he squatted on the rug and left a more solid calling card.  I wasn't there at the time, but my mom tells me my 4 year old daughter saw it and went screaming into the bathroom, grabbed some toilet paper, picked it up and threw it in the toilet!!  Can you believe it???

I just read a few more ideas online I might give a try.  Caiden loves superheroes and one idea suggested using raisins to show that superheroes go on the potty.  Won't THAT be an entertaining one to watch!  I'll never look at raisins the same...

Another idea was to cut a hole in his diaper and let him sit on the toilet with his diaper on.  That one kinda scares me.  I'm afraid it will look like a rabbit got loose in the house.

I think I'll try the raisin thing.  If that doesn't work, it's back to diapers in the evening.  The last thing I want to do is stress out both of us when we could be spending the time having fun!

My baby boy, now almost 15 yo, I completely gave up hope on potty training. At 3, he started a new daycare, his teacher suggested giving him a few days to adjust and she would re-introduce big boys pants. The following Monday, Ms. Theresa, requested big boys pants. Maxx started potting that day and never had another accident. I think it was because his daycare class was full of boys his age. Monkey see Monkey do! We tried the targets, going when Daddy went, cherrios..... Best of Luck. Girls are easier to train. Girls ROCK!!!

Stop stressing. It doesn't sound like he's ready yet and until he is - forget it - trust me.

He obviously knows 'how' to use the toilet so now it is a matter of him 'wanting' to use it instead of his diaper. At this point, it's about control - he has it, you don't . . . and he knows it!

Eventually, he will become embarrassed by 'having to wear' a diaper or diaper like items and will want to use the toilet.

Lynda... Our boys were born just about the same time. Your son is about a month older than mine. I am stuck at the same place as you with him. But I can tell you.... The cutting a hole in the diaper works... for some kids... That was the magic trick with my daughter. She would NOT go #2 on the potty... so one day I cut a hole in her diaper... and she didnt know about it. I knew about what time she had to go... and sure enough I saw the signs... I asked her if she could sit on the potty and pretend to go... which she didnt like at first, but settled right in. And sure enough she went... it fell through into the potty... and that was that... she thought it was the coolest thing in the world... and it was the end of that! So I would surely try it. My son... is just NOT at the point.. he has his days... Somedays he will run up to me and tell me he has to go and will do it all by himself... other days... its a battle... Good luck to both of us!! :)

I wouldn't stress about it. My daughter was potty trained except for the nubmer 2 part. It took another six months for that and then she did it on her own. Bribes did not work. Not dolls or pretty lace on rear undies. I believe when he is ready it will happen. Until then, something at night is a great idea.

Bless your heart! I have 3 grown children 2 girls and 1 boy, ages 21,24,and 27, with my son being the middle child. He was definitely the hardest to potty train. Hindsight being 20/20, I would now be more relaxed about it and realize that in the grand scheme of things that it just was not that important. So he stays in diapers for a while longer, everyone's sanity is well worth that price!Fortunately we have disposal diapers, unlike our mother's generation, who were constantly having to wash cloth diapers, dealing with the poo from the time we were born. I think sometimes that is why it is so hard for us to potty train our kids because we have always been able to dispose of the yucky diapers with little or no "handling"! Enjoy the time with your precious children now because it doesn't get any easier then this, only different!

Lynda, We went through the same thing when my son was almost 4 (now 7)...#1 was no problem from age 2, but he wouldn't do #2 in the potty...he would always scream for his "buzz right -ears" (he had buzz lightyear pull ups) when he needed to do the #2! We did cut holes in the seat of several pairs, but it never worked. We threatened him, offered rewards, made him sit on the potty for long periods of time...nothing worked until I told him I had something magic to help him do #2 in the potty. I told him to squeeze one of those beenie babies that were in McDonald's Happy Meals at the time while he was sitting on the potty. The very first time he tried it, he used #2 in the potty, and never asked for the "buzz right-ears" again!! He was very proud of himself and amazed at mom's magical powers!!Good luck..if I had it to do again, I wouldn't stress so much!

The rewards chart didnt work with my oldest and when all else failed a decided to try it with the youngest. She loved getting the stickers but it didnt bother her if she had an accident. I decided to make her come with me and put a big black X on the chart when she had an accident. She only had two accidents and been fully trained since.

I have three kids, the youngest is the only boy. He didn't even want to hear about the potty.

So...I went to amazon.com and ordered a DVD called Potty Power. It's silly, sort of stupid (from an adult point of view), and the songs are catchy as a cold. The upshot of which is, he played it to death...and wanted to go potty like a big kid.

Might give it a try.

I used potty training rewards to potty train our son. He loved pushing the audio button hearing he is a Big Boy followed by a door he could open to find a chocolate treat. He really became involved and was peeing in his potty right away. After a week he began to go number two in his potty as well. He showed signs he was ready to potty and this really made him want to go in his potty. Have a look and see if this would work for you. www.pottytrainingrewards.com

Your son's getting there. He knows the cues on when he has to go... now, you have to redirect him where to go when he feels that urge. I told my son that when he feels his tummy rumble, he needed to take his bits to the pool because no one else wanted to smell it or pick it up. My son did do it once on the carpet but I gave him a paper towel for him to pick it up. worked like a charm and it didn't take long at all. My son was much easier to train than my daughter. My son was 2 and my daughter nearly 4. It'll come in good time, don't give up just yet! :)
