Carys is six weeks old now. And as every parent says, it’s gone by incredibly fast. According to Murhpy’s Law, I went into labor about 7am Superbowl morning. My husband, a huge Bears fan, expected it. I told him not to worry about it, that it would be probably very late that night or early the next morning before #3 arrived. He didn’t really believe me but we went on with our Superbowl plans anyway. We had family in town so we made all kinds of food and watched the game and the commercials. I don’t know which was more interesting to watch, the commercials or my contractions. We made it through the Superbowl, although my husband said I might as well of had the baby since his beloved Bears tanked. We checked into the hospital very early the next morning. Every pregnant woman in the area must have chowed on some hot Buffalo wings because they were packing the maternty ward ready to deliver. Carys didn’t make her entrance until 10:27am. She was 8lbs 11oz and 20 ¾ inches long. I just knew I was having a boy. I was so shocked to hear it was a girl. I planned to go home the next day, but about half the people in my house had that nasty stomach bug that was going around. It paid off staying an extra day because Carys and I didn’t get sick while my husband did.

Since Carys is my third child, I thought, ok, I’ve got this thing down. It should be a piece of cake, right? Surely I won’t have to deal with colic like I did with Caiden. With him I had to avoid dairy, chocolate and just about everything except chicken and rice, for about five months. This time, just to be safe, I cut down on dairy and chocolate for the first few weeks. Carys seems fine. I’ve since cut way back up! J
Carys started nursing right away, thank goodness. But a couple of weeks later I thought it wasn’t quite right. Sure enough, that little piece of vertical tissue under her tongue was too far forward on her tongue and basically too short. It prevented her from nursing correctly. A trip to the ENT’s office and a quick snip and it was fixed. It was one of those things that’s really hard on the parent but not that tough on the baby. She was fine within two days and nursing better. Although she still needs some fine tuning.
As far as sleeping, she’s doing pretty well. She’s waking up a couple of times a night. But she goes back to sleep pretty easily. She doesn’t like to be put down for naps yet. But she’s out cold when she’s in her car seat and we’re running errands. She has a pretty good fussy time in the evening from about 5-8:30pm. That conveniently coincides with Caiden’s fussy time. He’s deep into the terrible twos. So dinner is as far from relaxing as you can get, as any parent knows. My poor husband leaves a stressful job and comes straight home to mayhem. We wolf down our dinner while catching the food and plate that Caiden is throwing. Carys is usually giving us a good solid cry so I tend to be wearing her at this point. Caiden loved the front carrier. Carys fights it, crying, for about 10-15 minutes. I always try to put the kids down early, since I have to go to bed early. But so far, Carys refuses to go to bed any earlier than 9pm. I’ve got six weeks to change that. Because momma’s gonna need her sleep when she goes back to work.
Oh, did I mention she’s starting to smile! Nothing melts the heart quicker than a grinning baby!
Lastly I want to say thank you to all the people who wrote in congratulating me on the birth of Carys. It really warms my heart knowing you care.
