When it comes to navigating around a new metropolitan area, I am usually pretty savvy. I’ve lived in four states and six different cities since graduating from college and my jobs often required me to drive around to produce news stories or direct reporters and photographers to breaking news locations.
That said, I’m good with maps and I always have one in the car.
Well, after studying my map for a brief period recently, I made the mistake of thinking that I fully understood the concept of I-440 and the way it loops around the city.
I learned today that I must have missed something.
After missing my exit during a torrential downpour, I got off at the next exit and did what seemed to be a completely logical turnaround to get me back to my original spot. .
But my logic somehow failed.
I think the breakdown came when I was faced with the words “inner” and “outer” as opposed to East and West.
Now, I’m sure there’s an easy way to distinguish between the two and forgive me if this seems stupid, but I need help. I can handle it during my commute because it’s familiar territory and I know which way to go, but once I’m away from Western Blvd and navigating elsewhere, I can’t make any promises.
So, can someone give me a little reminder? What’s the trick?
Can I ignore those words and simply worry about direction?
It seems to me that at some point you’re actually traveling north or south but I know that would be too confusing to throw into the mix, particularly if the point of the interstate is largely to travel east and west. And, it’s really a moot point.
Tell me, is this just something you grow to understand after a while?
I’m still pretty new, so hopefully I’m jumping the gun, or maybe it was simply the rain that got me all messed-up and this won’t be an issue at all in the future.
