Trying new food

I've made it a goal to make at least two or three new dinners a week for the kids.   I always try something with ingredients they'll like.  It's not like I try something funky.   I'm no Betty Crocker but I'm pretty handy in the kitchen.  I thoroughly enjoy trying new dinners and desserts.  I've made some things that I thought were fantastic and fairly easy.  I was so proud of myself.  But the kids take one look at it and turn up their noses or say, "I don't like it"!  I'm now getting a much better appreciation for my mother cooking for me as a kid!  So lately I've kinda just decided what the heck, I'm going to try anything.  One weekend we boiled some shrimp with a bunch of seasonings.  I thought no way will they eat that.  And of course, they couldn't get enough.  New Year's Day I cooked my first batch of black eyed peas.  I kinda winged it but they came out really tasty.  Caiden had fourths.   I started buying some different fruit, like pomegranates, gooseberries and red currants.  And what do you know they loved the pomegranate seeds (Caiden even ate the actual seed) and the very tart gooseberries and currants!  I just can't figure it out!  So from now on,  anything is fair game for dinner.  The second you think you have their eating habits figured out, it changes.  You just never know what those little rascals will take a liking to.

Lynda, you have got to try to fix Shepard's Pie. My little sister is very picky and will not eat anything, but she tears into the Shepard's Pie. It is just a mixture of hamburger, greenbeans, mashed potatoes and shredded cheese. It is so god, or you can try Chicken and Ricwe Casserole. Chicken, Rice and chesse Ewually as good as the Shepard's Pie

Lynda, have you ever heard of Tastefully Simple? It is the original taste-testing gourmet food company in the country. Please check out my website for some scrumptious and EASY recipes that will be great for the kids and super simple for you! www.tastefullysimple.com/web/smoody My husband and I wake up with you guys every morning. Best wishes for your delivery! Susan Moody, South Hill, VA

If you want a tried and true way of fixing Collards to go with them black eyed peas just ask ; My Grand Mother Mary Bishop owned a boarding house in Laurinburg for over 40 years and she cooked some of the best food in town .

George and Wynn in West End

My husband's parents must have thrown him hotdogs, hamburgers and steak.........because that's a lot of what he will eat. He has a very bland palate and has no desire to try anything different in the least.......what a bore to cook for!

If you are searching for new foods to fix, you need to check out recipezaar.com My friend bought me the premium membership so I now have various cookbooks in there with several recipes I have found under various headings/subtitles and ingredients. It's wonderful. Good luck, my daughter is now grown and a fairly healthy eater; she now eats things she never ate before and doesn't eat things she grew up with. Except mac and cheese. She'll never outgrow that!

Yay! I'm glad to see other parents branching out from pasta, hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza. We started out early with our two children (2 and 4 years old); they eat most everything we eat, but they are required to _try_ everything. And every few months, we have the kids try something that they said they didn't like in the past. Their tastes DO change over time.

The result of all this? Our kids just LOVE spicy Indian food and sushi and complain when there isn't something 'green' on their plate. It's gonna cost us a little more in the long run (Indian and Sushi are a bit more expensive than hamburger and pizza joints), but we can all eat the same, good food when we go out to eat or at home...
