Rotavirus

It sounds nasty, rotavirus, and it is. At first I thought Caiden was just having his normal reaction to antibiotics (diarrhea). He had a couple of blowouts and I mean blowouts. The kind where the only thing that wasn't contaminated were his sleeves. I'm talkin' a nearly full body blowout. Plus he threw up and wouldn't eat. And I'm here to tell ya, the boy LOVES to eat. So after a trip to the doctor and a stool sample (don't even ask how I collected that...) I found out he had Rotavirus. That meant he had to stay home until all symptoms passed. The poor little guy was just pathetic the first few days. He would barely nurse and drink water and wouldn't eat a thing. But his backside was running at full throttle. I wanted to hold him all the time. He was fussy and just couldn't get comfortable. I could tell he was dropping weight. I felt so powerless to help. With a virus like that, you just have to let it run it's course. After a few days he finally started to eat some yogurt, which was a huge relief. This is the first time I've dealt with my kids having this type of virus. Usually it's a cold or ear infections. This one made me nervous because he could very easily become dehydrated and need IV fluids. But he pulled through like a trooper. By the 7th day, yesterday, he finally ate three normal meals. What a relief! He seems like he's back to his old, happy self. After a visit to the doctor today, I think he'll be ready to go back to day care tomorrow after a whole week out. Fortunately with my schedule I've been able to leave work after the morning news to go home and take care of him. But I've already burned a lot of sick days and there's a whole lot of the year still to come. I hate having to worry about not having enough sick days with two kids and 9 months to go. I know it's a problem most parents face.... The last thing you want to do is be at work when your child is hurting....
