DMC: My adoption journey

Flipping through channels on television this weekend, I saw a scheduled program on VH1 entitled DMC: My Adoption Journey that was a documentary on Darryl McDaniel (DMC of the rap group RUN DMC) and his journey to discover more about his adoption and his birthmother. McDaniel didn't find out he was adopted until a few years ago and he finally now was ready to deal with what all that entails.

I saved the program, finally having some time today to sit down and watch the program. It is turned out to be an honest and emotional look at his search. A compelling story, it way too short to put it all of the nuiances in an hour. I won't give away the details but I was amazing at how much vulnerability and emotion he shows. Choking up, crying, therapy and group sessions aren't the usual fare from rap stars, even grown up ones in their 40s.

As part of his saga, he has a new album coming out this month and he is releasing a version of Cats in the Cradle with Sarah McLachlan, with additional verses they added, titled Just In Time. Her music was a huge comfort for him during some times and she too is adopted. The video and song will be focusing on adoption.

Worth watching even if it is too short - 1 hour VH1 time, which means way too many commercials. Genuine, honest and unexpectedly so. Not for small kids but definitely for birth and adoptive parents. Don't expect Antoine Fisher-level dramatics and certainly, McDaniels had the benefits that financial rewards reap in his search, which make the search much easier than many adoptees face.

Check out DMC: My Adoption Journey? on VH1 which will be re-airing the program this week:
Thursday, Mar. 2 @ 12/11c PM
Sunday, Mar. 5 @ 4:30/3:30c PM

I'm sure they'll add more dates as well as his album doesn't come out until mid-March and this certainly helps get publicity for it.
