Background about our family, part VI
MAPP classes are well intentioned but I don't feel like I'm learning too terribly much. It could be because I'm reading like 800 adoption books right now, researching tons and just hearing a lot of the same thing. Jeff doesn't seem to fascinated either though. I understand the class has to cover the bases for people who have no idea but I wish for MORE specifics and MORE strategies.
The classes has bonded well for the most part, several couples I can see us keeping in touch with. A lot of chuckles and sharing with most of the people has occurred.
I say most because the husband of one couple is about as poorly suited to adopt as anyone I have ever met. I do not know why he is here unless it is to either test us or unify us all in the class in arguing, sighing and laughing at him.
He repeatedly says any kid in his home will simply behave because that is what they are required to do. He was clearly raised with an iron fist and continues that tradition by raising his children that way now.
He doesn't understand why the foster care rules do not permit spanking kids. He makes jokes of all the role playing exercises. He makes remarks so stupid you want to slap him.
The wife is very nice, I’m sure she is a wonderful caring mother. To their credit, they do drive an hour to get to the meeting but he’s missed to two of the four meetings already though due to work (he works for law enforcement). They just tell the wife to go over the course material and discussion topics with him. Yeah, I’m sure that is happening – I’m betting he is a great listener to her (sarcasm).
At times, the entire back of the classroom rolls their eyes and gives each other incredulous looks, astonished at not only what he says but that he could have the gall to say it outloud. The husband of one of the couples we like and I have taken to out and out arguing with him when he says this stuff.
I hope he isn't allowed to adopt at this point because he just isn't ready.
