Brain Awareness Week at the Museum of Life and Science
The Museum of Life and Science in Durham will have some special activities this week to mark Brain Awareness Week.

The programs are held in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill's Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies. Special stations will be in The Lab at the museum through Saturday. They happen 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday.

Here's what visitors will find:

Robo-Brain! Station 1: How your brain “talks” to muscles. This station has brain specimens - including a real human brain! - and skull models that are props for talking to visitors about the brain and how it controls our muscles and behavior.
Robo-Brain! Station 2: Look at real brains and play with a robot arm to learn about the latest technology in prosthetics.

It's important for young people and their parents to receive positive messages about brain health, including the importance of protecting growing brains from drugs and alcohol, according to a press release from the Bowles Center.

"We know the younger a child is when exposed to alcohol, especially to binge drinking, the greater chance for long-term brain changes with real health consequences, including addiction," said Dr. Fulton T. Crews, the center's director. "This is a vitally important issue for North Carolina and our nation."

The programs are free with admission to the Museum of Life and Science, which is $16 for adults and $11 for kids ages 3 to 12.
