Lidl NOT coming to Clayton, NC

Posted October 4

Lidl

It looks like Lidl will not be coming to Clayton, NC after all.

The unfortunate news was announced on jocoreport.com and indicates that "A notice was sent to Clayton town official alerting them that the grocery store chain would not be building a store as planned on US70 near Wal-Mart. "

I spoke with Mayor Pro Tem Michael Grannis today and he shared that the information came from Lidl's upper management that "they did not want to proceed at this time." They gave no specific reasons, though.

I have reached out to Lidl asking why they pulled out of the Clayton store location and will update if any additional information becomes available. Let's just hope it's because they are looking for a bigger and better Clayton location!

    Lidl's American conquest sluggish
(9/29) Lidl’s first American stores’ performance was “frighteningly weak”, German and American media report. The board will take measures and The German company has strengthened its grip on its overseas operations. Lidl opened its very first American stores on 15 June and has major ambitions. It tried to position itself as an innovator and its arrival sparked a feisty price war in the United States. Within three months of its first American store, it has 37 stores, but the results have been disappointing, with the boards growing increasingly impatient.

This is extremely disappointing. Frankly, I'm annoyed. Clayton or ANYWHERE southeast of Raleigh would be a prime location for a Lidl, Harris Teeter, WEGMANS, Old Navy, Trader Joes, or whole foods. Gyms like Lifetime Fitness, O2 Fitness and Fitness Connection would make a killing. Johnston county is an untapped market. Seriously, why do they need 2 Wegmans in Cary???

I am SOOOOOO disappointed! I sent them a note through their link letting them know how much money they stand to make if they do come to Clayton. Hopefully the mention of $$$ might change their minds. :( :( :(

They need a store somewhere south of Raleigh. Got Wake Forest, Wilson and other areas but nothing in southern Wake or Johnston.
