Libraries, bookstores gear up for summer reading programs

Libraries are gearing up for another summer of programs designed to ensure that kids keep at least a few books in their hands in between camps and pool and summer break time.

School is winding down for many kids around here ... for some summer has already started!

And that means libraries are gearing up for another summer of programs designed to ensure that kids keep at least a few books in their hands in between camps and pool and summer break time.

Libraries across the region offer free programs for babies to adults and sometimes even include incentives for reading a certain number of books. These are great ways to keep kids reading all summer long.

2019 Library Summer Reading Programs

Wake County libraries' summer reading program will host kick off celebrations June 1 and June 2 at locations across the county. Programs are designed for babies to adults. Young children and grade schoolers can win weekly prizes when they visit the library and check out books. Teens can enter to win prizes. Libraries also are offering free weekly programs for kids from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Durham County Library starts its summer reading program on June 15. It offers programs for babies to adults, including lots of regular programming for kids.
Orange County libraries' program begins June 1 at the Main Library in Hillsborough. Programs and activities are offered for young kids to adults.
Registration for Chapel Hill Public Library's programs kicks off its summer reading challenge with a celebration on June 14. Programs will be offered throughout the summer.
Locations that are part of the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield start their programs in mid-June.
Cumberland County libraries also has programs for kids and teens in the summer. They start in early June.

2019 Summer Reading Programs at Bookstores

Barnes & Noble asks kids to fill out a summer reading journal to get a free book.
Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh also has book clubs for kids and teens, along with author visits lined up this summer.
