Early safe spaces: Hidden history of Raleigh's LGBTQIA+ community

In June, WRAL News recognizes the LGBTQIA+ community by highlighting its history, local leaders and events happening around the Triangle for Pride Month.

This month, we will be covering Pride-related events and resources, talking with community leaders and providing a platform for local voices in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride Month events and resources

Wanting to get involved in educational events and community gatherings? WRAL aims to compile and cover educational, community, historic and volunteer events related to Pride Month in and around the Triangle. Do you have an event you'd like to see listed? Let us know here!

LGBTQIA+ history in the Triangle

WRAL News is working to share the history of the Triangle area's LGBTQIA+ community.

We'll interview those who recall a time when 'not all were welcome,' who share stories about the city's earliest 'safe' gathering places – bars, bookstores and shops. We'll hear about the first LGBTQIA+ newsletters, the first Pride events, and how the early years of the AIDS crisis impacted local members of LGBTQIA+ community.
If you have someone you feel should be interviewed or honored, please let us know here.
