KINSTON, N.C. — All three sitting members of the Lenoir County Board of Elections resigned Monday following months of tension between the board and the county's longtime elections director.

In January, the board petitioned Gary Bartlett, executive director of the State Board of Elections, to let them fire county elections director Dana King on allegations of mismanagement.

Bartlett denied their petition, saying both sides were to blame for poor communications and personality conflicts. He placed King on probation until Dec. 1 and ordered both sides to take corrective action.

Board Chairwoman Sharon Kanter and member Kim Allison, both Democrats, resigned Monday in protest.

Secretary Oscar Herring, a Republican, said he was leaving to spend more time with his grandchild.

County leaders will have to appoint replacements for the three board members, whose terms were set to expire July 1.
