Lejeune Marine killed in Afghanistan

A Camp Lejeune Marine died Monday after being wounded in Afghanistan, the military announced Wednesday.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune Marine died Monday after being wounded in Afghanistan, the military announced Wednesday.

Capt. Garrett T. Lawton, 31, of Kanawha, W.Va., was wounded while conducting combat operations in Herat Province, Afghanistan, officials said. He was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion at Camp Lejeune.

Lawton joined the Marine Corps in June 1996 and was trained as a weapons systems operator.
