Leesville Road teacher's assistant charged with sex with a student

Posted March 26, 2013

— A 25-year-old teacher's assistant at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh appeared in court Tuesday on charges he had sex with a student.

Javon Lerail Walker was brought in for questioning Monday night after school officials asked police to investigate reports of a sexual relationship between Walker and a student.

He was then arrested, charged with four counts of sex offense with a female student and placed in the Wake County jail under a $200,000 secured bond.

Investigators say he had sex with the student several times between March 1 and Monday.

Under North Carolina law, a person in a position of authority such as a teacher can face criminal prosecution for sexual contact with a student even if the acts were consensual. Sex offense with a student is a felony.

Walker was hired as a teacher's assistant at Leesville Road in September, according to Wake County Public School System spokeswoman Stella Shelton. He resigned Monday night.

Shelton would not comment on Walker directly, but said that, at the high school level, teacher's assistants work with special education students.

So not a single mention at all that this guy played football at state huh? Had it been a former UNC player, you people would have it all over your site, and the "morality police" over at the n&o would have a full page writeup about it already. You Raleigh folks are such hypocrites.

C'mon people. Stop saying your kids are under attack. I graduated from high school in 99' and a decent portion of the females ran around screaming that us high school dudes were lame, we didn't have nice cars, we didn't have a pocket full of money to take them out, etc. They went after anybody not in high school. I knew a couple of girls having sex with their managers at work. I knew a couple of girls running around messing with Marines on Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune. Like I said, don't go around telling everyone WCPSS is after your daughters.

These types of actions have to be stopped hard! It is the law that a teacher/asst CANNOT have any improper contact with ANY student!
Apply the law at its harshest setting and let it do its thing!

Another pervert has been on the loose. With all the publicity around on this subject, they still think that they won't get caught. When he is found guilty, a long prison term, no plea bargaining, no time off, etc.

"QUESTON - Does this apply for the University setting also? If not, I wonder why? And don't tell me it's an age issue. WRAL said it's a "position of authority" issue."

There's a simple answer to this question -- there is a separate law in NC that only applies to K-12 school teachers, TAs, etc. which says that it is illegal for the employee to have sexual relations with any student (where they are employed) regardless of age. Otherwise, the age of consent in NC is 16. Since college professors are not K-12 school employees and their is no other special law for them, it is not illegal for professors to have such consensual relationships with anyone over 16. Quite inappropriate and unethical and in many institutions a valid reason for dismissal but not illegal.

Since when are there teacher assistants in high school? I thought they had them in classrooms up to 3rd or 4th grade? None of my three kids, two of whom are still in high school have ever had a teacher assistant in a high school class! Gingerly non

All self contained special Ed classes have assistants from k thru 12th grade.

I think the legal age of consent in NC is 16, so if she is at least that old, this will not be considered statutory rape. Even if the age of consent is 18, as it is in some places, or if she is younger than whatever the age of consent is, I hope we can all acknowledge the difference between statutory rape and rape rape.

Regardless, she could have been 20 and if she is a student, there is a separate law prohibiting a teacher from engaging in a sexual relationship w/ her.

It does not matter how old the 'student' is. But in this case, albet the student is under 18. It is the same with doctors and patients.
