SANFORD, N.C. — A Lee County sixth grader was issued a juvenile petition for bringing weapons to school Tuesday after school officials found an unloaded handgun and two knives in his possession.

A student told the bus driver that the boy, 11, had the items. They were discovered as he exited the bus at SanLee Middle School, 2309 Tramway Road in Sanford.

School officials said the same student brought a knife to school Sept. 15. That knife was discovered discarded on school grounds.
