— A Lee County sixth grader was issued a juvenile petition for bringing weapons to school Tuesday after school officials found an unloaded handgun and two knives in his possession.

A student told the bus driver that the boy, 11, had the items. They were discovered as he exited the bus at SanLee Middle School, 2309 Tramway Road in Sanford.

School officials said the same student brought a knife to school Sept. 15. That knife was discovered discarded on school grounds.

"just look at the TV shows and the news" bonnieblue10
You must be wrong here Bonnie, violent TV, violent Video, violent hate speeches, parents drinking and yelling at little league games, none of that stuff affects us or our kids. Just ask those that produce it, it is only a game or nonsense and children above all know this and never act this stuff out. Get with the program Bonnie.

The child has a problem and the authorities need to begin with his homelife. Having access to a gun, tells me that there is no supervision at home. We all know where the children are getting these ideas from, just look at the TV shows and the news. There is nothing but violence being shown to the children and society wonders where the kids get these ideas. Again, it begins with what they are taught and allowed to do at home. No morals are being taught to our young. Anything goes is the norm and settle disagreements with a gun. The child needs help and I hope he gets it. Thank God that there are children with enough sense to report the boy, but most of all thank God that it didn't become another tragic story on the news.

I thought it meant a year-long suspension for bringing a weapon to school? So why was he back at school anyway?

DeathRow-IFeelYourPain-NOT - "I will argue until the day I die that this child has the right to have his own gun and knife. If brought up and trained properly, children younger than him are capable of learning gun safety and shooting a gun."

Seriously, I'm all for rights to bear arms, but do you think a child that young has the maturity and temper control to have free access to a gun? Take their allowance away and get shot for it? I don't think so.

I don't know about you but I check my child's back pack before she leaves the house. Why does a child have access to a gun anyways? Poor excuses for parents...

I will argue until the day I die that this child has the right to have his own gun and knife. If brought up and trained properly, children younger than him are capable of learning gun safety and shooting a gun.

BUT... since he had already been caught previously bringing a gun to school, this kid or parents obviously don't take it seriously. The law should come down hard on the student AND the parents.
