Lawmakers call special coal ash meeting
The legislature's Environmental Review Commission will hold a special meeting to deal with potential responses to the Feb. 2 coal ash spill in late April.

We expect to receive comprehensive updates from the stakeholders on the progress regarding the Dan River cleanup and planning for coal ash remediation for the remaining plants across the state," Rep. Samuelson, R-Mecklenburg, said in a statement. "We want members of the General Assembly and the public to be assured North Carolina’s drinking water is safe and see that proactive measures are being taken to ensure a spill doesn’t happen again."
The meeting will be held April 22 at 1:30 p.m.
Coal ash has been much in the news since a pipe at a now-closed Duke plant in Eden burst, spilling 39,000 tons of toxin-laced coal ash into the river. Along with the immediate aftermath of that accident, the state and company have been responding to stories about their slow response to evidence of toxins leaching from 14 locations across the state brought forward by environmental groups.
