Lawmaker introduces tax break bill for homeschooling parents

Posted June 15

— A bill that would give tax breaks to parents who homeschool their children has been introduced in the New Jersey Legislature.

The Jersey Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2seUWeQ ) Democratic Assemblywoman Angela McKnight proposed the legislation to allow parents who make up to $150,000 to claim a tax credit for homeschooling expenses.

Taxpayers would benefit from tax credits of up to $1,000 for each child. Credits would max out at $3,000 each year.

Items included as homeschool expenses under the bill include textbooks, computer software and membership fees for libraries.

McKnight says all students in the state deserve access to resources that foster development and prepare them to compete in a global economy.

The New Jersey School Boards Association has not taken a position on the bill.
