Authorities say a man charged with killing a Clinton, Missouri, police officer during a traffic stop has been arrested.

Missouri State Highway Patrol dispatchers say 39-year-old Ian McCarthy of Clinton was taken into custody Tuesday night in Henry County. McCarthy is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Officer Gary Michael during a traffic stop Sunday night.

Authorities said earlier Tuesday that a search of a house in the small town of Chilhowee, about 25 miles northwest of Clinton, came up empty.

More than 100 local, county and state law enforcement officers had been searching for McCarthy.

Authorities searching for a man charged with first-degree murder in the death of a Clinton, Missouri, police officer say a search of a house about 25 miles northwest in tiny Chilhowee came up empty.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe told reporters Tuesday afternoon that officers converged on the house to follow up on a lead, much as they'd searched another home, woods and school buses earlier in the day in search for 39-year-old Ian McCarthy of Clinton.

But Lowe says a search of the residence failed to turn up McCarthy.

Police say McCarthy shot and killed Officer Gary Michael during a traffic stop Sunday night.

The brother of a western Missouri officer who was fatally shot on Sunday says his brother got his "dream job" when he joined the police force.

Officer Gary Michael died Sunday when he was shot during a traffic stop in Clinton, Missouri. Authorities are still searching for 39-year-old Ian McCarthy of Clinton, who is charged with first-degree murder in Michael's death.

Michael's brother, Chris Michael, says his family was aware that the officer could be hurt but didn't believe it would happen in Clinton, a town of just 9,000 people.

He says his brother always wanted to serve the public.

Chris Michael says his "brother was a light to the world," and that "One man's bad decision took that light from the world."

A Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman says the manhunt for a suspect in the killing of a Missouri police officer has been complicated by a varying terrain that includes fields, woods and abandoned buildings.

More than 100 local, county and state law enforcement officers have been searching possible hiding spots for 39-year-old Ian McCarthy since Clinton police officer Gary Michael was shot late Sunday.

Patrol spokesman Sgt. Bill Lowe said Tuesday that about 100 officers are involved in the search. They come from Clinton, Henry County and Highway Patrol divisions, as well as about 30 agencies from the surrounding area. Federal officials offered but haven't formally joined the manhunt.

Lowe says authorities believe McCarthy is still in the Clinton area because no evidence has been found to indicate that he's moved elsewhere.

The man who is on the run after he allegedly shot and killed a western Missouri police officer was not well known in the area and has no immediate family there.

Law enforcement officers have been searching for 39-year-old Ian McCarthy since Clinton police officer Gary Michael was killed during a traffic stop late Sunday. Authorities believe he is still somewhere in the Clinton or Henry County area.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe says some people have told investigators that McCarthy was an acquaintance and only a few considered him a friend. Lowe says it makes the search more difficult when a suspect has no close ties to the area.

Lowe says the Clinton police department had little previous contact with McCarthy and there is no evidence McCarthy knew Michael.

Authorities searching for a suspect in the killing of a western Missouri police officer believe he is still in the area where the shooting occurred.

State, county and city law enforcement officers are searching for 39-year-old Ian McCarthy, who is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Clinton police officer Gary Michael late Sunday.

Michael was killed during a traffic stop in Clinton, 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said early Tuesday that investigators have no information indicating McCarthy has left Clinton or Henry County.

Lowe says investigators are "fairly certain" McCarthy is still on foot.

Michael was the first officer to die in the line of duty in Clinton, a town of about 9,000 people.
