Whenever I'm visiting a local museum or historic site, we usually peruse the gift shops and I always think to myself, "I need to remember this at birthday and Christmas time." I always find unique items for kids that I don't find in the average toy department.
So, over the next week, I'll feature some top picks from local museum gift shops. Today, it's the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, which actually boasts two shops - one in the museum and one in the Nature Research Center, its new wing.
Here are recommendations from Heather Heath, manager:
Yikerz!: The magnetic board game. Control the magnetic forces with exciting game play for all ages. $19.95. For ages 14 and up.
Micro Terrariums Fly Trap Fiends: This kit features the infamous Venus Fly Trap. Watch these fascinating plants grow from harmless seeds into vicious bug-eating monsters! $3.50 For ages 4 and up.
Desk Pendulum: The ultimate "desk toy." Using Sir Issac Newton's third law has never been this mesmerizing!
Swing one ball and one ball on opposite ends swings in response. $8.95. For ages 8 and up.
Bingo!: We have several science-related bingo games that are fun for ages 3 and up. $16.95.
Crystal Growing: You'll find many different types of rocks and minerals for young collectors. Crystal growing kits are always a fun activity. And there are stocking stuffers -- magic growing trees, growing rocks, and these growing kits (pictured). $3-$10. Recommended for 10 and up.
Books: The shop has an assortment of books for kids and adults.
