Lake Wheeler beach reopens

Posted September 12, 2010

— Wake County has reopened the recreational swimming areas at Lake Wheeler beach, county officials announced Sunday.

The beach was closed Thursday due to elevated levels of the Entercocci bacteria, but was reopened Sunday after bacteria levels tested within Environmental Protection Agency standards for two consecutive days.

The county routinely tests recreational lakes for bacteria and when levels exceed EPA standards, the area is closed to “primary contact recreation,” which includes swimming or any activity where a person’s head may go underwater.

The county samples these lakes weekly each summer.

So, if you stop feeding them they'll stop dropping? Logical--sort of.

People need to stop feeding the geese. It is their droppings that are affecting the water.

Laughable. They close and reopen this cesspool almost weekly. Who in their right mind goes swimming in "fresh" water these days?

In case anyone is wondering, when the beach is "closed" they stop renting sailboats and kayaks, but not canoes and paddleboats.

I didn't realize they allowed swimming there ever. I've never seen anyone doing it.
