— Wake County has reopened the recreational swimming areas at Lake Wheeler beach, county officials announced Monday.

The beach was closed Aug. 24 due to elevated levels of the Entercocci bacteria, but was reopened Monday after bacteria levels tested within Environmental Protection Agency standards for two consecutive days.

The county routinely tests recreational lakes for bacteria and when levels exceed EPA standards, the area is closed to “primary contact recreation,” which includes swimming or any activity where a person’s head may go underwater.

The county samples these lakes weekly each summer.

Yup, no swimming at Lake Wheeler. The big story on WRAL last night was "Swimming reopens at Lake Wheeler Park"... Please, WRAL, do some investigation on this and quit telling people they can swim at this park!!

I work at LWP and I can say that I am 100% sure that there are NO swimming areas, never have been and never will be.

    Hi Lake Wheeler staff!

  • meBNme Aug 30, 2010

Wake county opproving the water for swimming and raleigh/lake officials allowing swimming in that spacific lake are two different things.

Ive never known swimming to be allowed on any of the Lake Wheeler beaches.

The first line reads "Wake County has reopened the recreational swimming areas" sounds like there are areas where the public can go swimming to me.

It really doesn't matter if you would or wouldn't WANT to swim here... IT'S NOT ALLOWED!!!!! There are absolutely ZERO recreational swimming areas at this lake... haven't been in my entire lifetime.

  • blahblahblah Aug 30, 2010

I would never swim in this lake. Every year it is closed numerous times.
