RALEIGH, N.C. — Water quality in Lake Wheeler in Raleigh has returned to normal levels, the city reported Monday. Authorities closed the beach to recreational activities Tuesday due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water. It was the second time this month that Wake County Environmental Services closed the beach.

Authorities closed the beach after a negative test on Aug. 6, only to reopen it Aug. 8.

The city already prohibits swimming at Lake Wheeler, but does normally allow kayaking,  sailboating and windsurfing. Those activities had resumed Monday, according to the city's Web site.
