— Wake County has reopened recreational swimming areas at Lake Wheeler beach after closing it because of elevated levels of bacteria.

The beach closed Wednesday after routine tests found levels of enterococci bacteria exceeded Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Follow-up tests showed levels were within EPA standards for two consecutive days.

Spirt Warrior,,,,,why does it always clear up when the beaches are closed for a couple of weeks??? If Cary was the issue the lake would be contaminated continuously. What the water sample reports and do a comparison on the opening of the beaches. I think Arizona may be onto something, called the TRUTH!

Isn't all the water around here just nasty period?

youcanthandletruth - "no one goes there and anyone who does and sticks a toe in that foul cesspool better get their shots."

    Lame statement!!!

Hundreds to thousands of people live on or near that lake.

Additionally, at some time in the future, Raleigh wants to use it for Raleigh's drinking water. The equipment has already been installed.

But the way things are now, Raleigh would be drinking Cary's sewage.

    God bless.

hereandnow99 - "And if you see someone changing a diaper in the water, call the frickin' ranger...sheesh. That's gross and clearly unhealthy!"

It has nothing to do with that.

It has to do with sewage spills from Cary over the years, at least one of which was massive.

Why wasn't Cary made to clean up Swift Creek and that lake after that big spill???

    God bless.

Because of the sewage Cary has sent downstream to this lake a time or two in the past few years, this whole lake needs to be stirred up, emptied and allowed to refill.

They keep blaming it on the ducks and geese, but that's nothing compared to what Cary sent downstream last summer.

But then if the stir it up and empty it, it will contaminate every stream and lake downstream.

    God bless.

Really, who would even consider swimming in this when there are so many pools in the area? It is just idiotic.

oh who cares with this. no one goes there and anyone who does and sticks a toe in that foul cesspool better get their shots.

Isn't this bacteria purely from human fecal matter?

People relieve themselves in the water. I have personlly witnessed this. I have also seen numerous people change a childs diaper in the water. It's not PC to point out the facts. They blame it on the geese! LOL, The geese have been there for as long as the lake has exsisted with no problems. ITS NOT THE GEESE!

Is it just me or does it seem Lake Wheeler is closed a lot due to elevated levels of bacteria? I don't know that I'd ever go swimming there.
