Ever seen a wave tank? They're pretty cool, not just for recreation but also for research, which is why the city of Los Angeles is gearing up for a major construction project at a currently unused pier in San Pedro. Called AltaSea, it's projected to open in 2018, and when it does, it won't be just any old wave tank: it will be the world's largest, part of a massive marine research complex that aims to attract scientists from all over the world.
The end result should be quite impressive, although one trembles to think of the work ahead for LA concrete firms and other construction companies as they prepare for this massive, complex project. A lot is riding, so to speak, on the waves this project will bring in, including upwards of 1,000 jobs and a place as a premier research institution.
