CARY, N.C. — Whether you crave savory or sweet , there are a lot of holiday dessert options at La Farm Bakery in Cary. The Out and About team had a chance to sit down with owner and baker Lionel Vatinet last week to sample a few of his creations. Here is our take on what we tried:
Stollen($8.99/$15.99) - This tender brioche is only made once a year and it is spectacular. The bread is filled with gold rum soaked raisins, orange peel, lemon zest and toasted almonds. Vatinet then fills it with almond cream and rolls it in European butter and sugar.
Artisan Snowman Bread ($14.99) - This is the perfect way to display that festive holiday dip you have been working on - or just bought at the store. Just hollow out the center of the snowman and fill it up.
Eggnog Sweetbread ($6.69) - Delicious and addictive. It has just enough eggnog in it. It is sweet but not overwhelming and the eggnog does't take over.
Pumpkin Sweetbread ($6.69) - Filled with pureed pumpkin and spices, this was a hit at my Thanksgiving gathering. Would go perfect with a cup of coffee on Christmas morning too.
Chocolate Cranberry Bread ($7.89) - This bread is filled with dark chocolate chunks and cranberries. A great dessert bread and would be a great bread pudding or French toast.
Chocolate Raspberry Tart ($28.99)- For the chocolate-lovers out there, this is perfect! This rich tart features imported Belgian chocolate over raspberries. Very good!
Creme Brulee Tart ($27.99) - Madagascar vanilla soaked in a creamy custard and caramelized on top - we highly recommend this dessert. The caramelized top is sweet and crunchy, a great contrast to the pudding-like center.
Linzer Challah ($8.29) - This challah is filled with fresh raspberries and cream and topped with rock sugar and toasted almonds. Love the raspberries in this one! Another bread that would be perfect for bread pudding or just served by the slice with a cup of coffee.
And for holiday gatherings, the bakery's old fashioned yeast rolls are perfect. You get 9 rolls for $6.29.
Some of these items are available at Whole Foods as well, but your best bet is probably heading into La Farm to pick what you want. (Get a Peppermint mocha while you are there!) There are also order forms so you can guarantee you will have that special dessert for the holidays. All holiday orders must be placed by Monday, Dec. 22.
