Kroger possibly buying The Fresh Market

Posted February 12

According to multiple sources, Kroger Co. is considering the purchase of The Fresh Market, based out of Greensboro, NC.

Reuters news service has reported that Kroger is in the second stage of an auction process that involves Kroger and multiple other interests.

It remains to be seen whether Kroger will end up purchasing The Fresh Market, but it will be very interesting to see what happens to the 170-store chain if that happens.

I have reached out to Kroger corporate, and their response was, "Kroger has no comment at this time about the reports that it is looking to buy The Fresh Market." And until an agreement is inked, that is the response I would expect.

As more information becomes available, we will let you know.

I shop Kroger and have no problem with them. I routinely pick up items to take for my folks as well, since they are stuck with only a Walmart close by. I get great deals and ours is clean and friendly. Their pharmacy has the best prices and service around. We have 5 other grocery stores within 2 miles, and it's no competition for us.

Kinda bummed about this one. I don't shop at fresh market that often but I do love to go in when I get a chance. It is a special place, always clean, just a place where I get special hints for special dinners and such. I don't shop at Kroger often ( probably haven't been in one in 2 years) but I remember the last time it was dirty and run down.

Ditto that! Maybe Kroger should invest in fixing their stores and personal (specifically the store at Maynard & Hoghhouse in Cary) before they consider buying more stores and ruining them as well.

Frankly, Ilove Kroger. I drive over from Rocky Mount and try to swing by Kroger as they have grest prices, grat meat, and great selection compared to Harris Teeter in RMt. Ialso love Ingles and Publix when I am traveling on the road. If you wantbad and out of date with poor selection, see a Wal-Mart.

This would be terrible. Kroger stores are disgusting and dirty.

Kroger wrecked what had been the best mainstream grocery chain in the state, Harris Teeter. There is no way the Fresh Market could possible survive contact with Kroger.

Thankfully Publix moved into the area and with Lowe's picking up their game there are options. Unfortunately, Earth Fare and Whole Foods will pick up a lot of Fresh Market's customers. We are 90% Fresh Market and 10% Lowe's. We will never shop at Kroger again. They are awful.

Kroger isn't doing a hostile takeover, The Fresh Market has put themselves up for auction. Right now, Kroger is one of a few bidding on them. There is a long road ahead in this, don't get all bent out of shape already.

How unfortunate; I love shopping at The Fresh Market and hate shopping at Kroger.

Wow, it is as bad as the small drug stores consolidating

My local Harris Teeter definitely went downhill after Kroger bought them.

Things I've called attention to the manager:
    - English Muffins on VIC. Expired a week earlier
    - Bagged cheese at buy 2 get 3 free: one of the bags was moldy, had to return it.
    - Bag of mandarin oranges went bad 3 days after I bought them - discovered it by smell.
    - Garlic bulbs that were sprouting.
    - Desiccated ginger.
    - Price increases labeled "new low price!" Example: Glade air fresheners that went from about $0.90 to about $1.20 - Produce area is always in a disarray. (didn't mention the last 2 to the manager)

I was willing to pay a little extra for HT quality, service, cleanliness and selection. I'm finding myself stopping at Food Lion and Lowe's (awful service) more often because HT definitely lost their shine.

This may not be too great for the Fresh Market.
