KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Town officials on Thursday named Lawrence Capps as Knightdale police chief.

Capps, who has worked for the Knightdale Police Department for four years, succeeds Jason Godwin, who leaves the department Friday for a private-sector job.

“We’re grateful to have someone with Lawrence’s skill set and knack for relationship building in this important position,” Mayor Russell Killen said in a statement. “He has already proven himself as a leader.”

Capps previously worked as a corrections officer and is a criminal justice instructor at Johnston Community College. He recently graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.

A graduate of Smithfield-Selma High School and Johnston Community College, Capps is expected to earn a criminal justice degree from Fayetteville State University in 2015.
