KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A Knightdale town councilman charged twice last month with driving while impaired has resigned, officials announced Tuesday.

Town Manager Seth Lawless released a brief statement saying Councilman Terrence Gleason resigned effectively immediately. Gleason was elected to his first term in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.

Gleason was arrested July 22 and July 27 on suspicion of DWI. At that time, Knightdale Mayor Russell Killen said he asked Gleason to resign because he was concerned about whether the councilman could fulfill his public duties.

Lawless said council will appoint someone to fill the remainder of Gleason's term.
