DURHAM, N.C. — A former teacher of Jawad Razai remembers him as a young man with a kind face and gentle spirit.

Razai, 18, was killed Tuesday in what investigators believe was an attempted robbery at a home on Pebblestone Drive in Durham. Razai went to the home to purchase a phone he found on Craigslist, police said.

Jarrion Hood, 18, is charged with Razai’s killing. He was also shot during the incident.

“You’re just kind of stunned because you don’t expect it,” Ann Hamilton said.

Hamilton was Razai’s special education teacher at Leesville High School, where he graduated in June.

“It's never easy to lose a child, or anyone you love, but to lose a young man like Jawad in such a brutal way, there are no words to put to it,” she said.

Hamilton described Razai as respectful, pleasant person who was going to be successful in life.

“He had it together, he had the family support, he knew what he wanted to do,” she said. “And that’s gone.”
