Kids can fish for free at more than 35 free fishing events for children in May and June.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, along with Neuse Sport Shop, Trout Unlimited and the U.S. Forest Service, are supporting the programs.
The events are held across the state to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week. Kids registered at any of the events can enter a statewide drawing to win more than 150 fishing-related prizes, according to the commission's website. Prizes include a lifetime sportsman license, a lifetime freshwater fishing license, tackle boxes, rod-and-reel combos and more.
Many are planned in the region on June 1. They include programs at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Cumberland County; Howell Woods in Johnston County; Strayhorn Pond in Orange County; Lake Reidsville in Rockingham County; and Lake Wheeler in Wake County.
Some of the events require pre-registration and set age limits. Check this PDF from the wildlife commission's website for details, schedules and contact information.
