Key figure in illegal DC mayoral campaign is sentenced

WASHINGTON — A key figure in the illegal, off-the-books campaign to elect Vincent Gray as mayor of Washington has been sentenced to six months of home confinement and three months in a halfway house.
The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/zaeeqcd) reports that a judge gave that sentence on Friday to 79-year-old Eugenia "Jeanne" Clarke Harris. Prosecutors had asked for the home confinement but not the halfway house.
Harris pleaded guilty to helping funnel more than $650,000 in illicit cash into Gray's 2010 campaign. The money was used to help turn out voters in poor, majority-black neighborhoods where Gray defeated then-mayor Adrian Fenty by big margins.
Gray denied all wrongdoing during his campaign. After a five-year investigation, prosecutors decided not to charge him. He won a Democratic primary for a D.C. Council seat in June.
