Kelly Clarkson joins 'The Voice,' says she wants to beat Blake Shelton

Posted May 13

NBC announced Thursday that Kelly Clarkson will join “The Voice” as a coach, but not for a little while, according to Variety.

The first winner of “American Idol” will sit alongside Adam Levine and Blake Shelton for the show’s 14th season. Oscar-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson announced she’d be on the show’s 13th season, which begins in the fall, Variety reported.

Clarkson previously appeared on “The Voice” as an adviser.

Clarkson announced her decision to join “The Voice” in a Facebook Live video with current “Voice” star Blake Shelton. Clark said she hoped to defeat Shelton in her first season.

“We’ve gone back and forth about a role as a coach for years, but the timing hasn’t been right until now,” she said, according to Variety.

According to Fox News, NBC’s “early announcement of Clarkson as a coach could be in response to ABC's announcement that it will bring back ‘American Idol’ just a year after it was canceled by Fox after 15 seasons.”

Earlier on Thursday, ABC announced it had interest in hiring Clarkson for the next season of “American Idol,” according to the Deseret News.

Clarkson’s representatives said they were trying to clear her schedule so she could film for the show, since the pop singer expressed interest in returning.

Now, it seems Clarkson will join “The Voice” at around the same time the new “Idol” season starts, Variety reported.

ABC insiders say the show aims to run on Sundays, with a possible results show on Monday — the same night “The Voice” airs.

“The two shows could even find themselves going head-to-head,” Variety reported.
