Gabrielle Giffords to visit Raleigh on gun safety campaign

The former Arizona congresswoman's was shot in the head Jan. 8, 2011, during a public appearance at a grocery store near Tucson. Six people were killed and 12 others were also injured in the attack.

Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, will stop by a local clay shooting range, before they head to a round table discussion with gun owners at 11 a.m. They will end their visit at the Pit Authentic Barbecue on Davie Street in Raleigh.

Giffords and Kelly kicked off the tour in the Las Vegas area on Monday with a visit to the Clark County Shooting Complex. It was the first time Giffords had fired a gun publicly since she was wounded. Paralyzed in the right arm from the attack, she held the gun with just her left hand as she took aim at a target.

Earlier this week, the couple made appearances in Alaska, North Dakota, Ohio, New Hampshire and Maine.

The Rights and Responsibilities Tour is hosted by Kelly's group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, which he founded the week after Giffords's attack.

Kelly has said that he thinks background checks on people who want to buy firearms at gun shows can help prevent shooting-related deaths and injuries.
