KC community garden's beauty spoiled by illegal dumping

But on Monday, someone spoiled the garden's beauty- illegally dumping couches, chairs, tables and other garbage feet away from the garden.

"I don't know why someone would come and just throw that garbage there in front of that beautiful community garden. It doesn't make sense," said Mary Cyr, director of Northeast Alliance Together, an organization aimed at improving the quality of life and development in the Northeast.

Cyr said illegal dumping is a problem throughout the northeast. The two main sources- people dumping garbage on abandoned properties and property owners evicting their tenants and leaving their furniture on the curb.

"What happens is [the tenants] are forced to leave immediately and they have to leave a lot of their belongs behind," said Cyr. "The landlord just put everything out on the curb."

Northeast Alliance Together has been working with the Kansas City Police Department to clean areas where dumping often occurs.

But this problem is not just limited to this section of the city. Dumping is a problem all over Kansas City, one of the reasons dumping investigators use cameras to catch those throwing away their trash in action.

Anyone caught illegally dumping furniture or trash could face fines up to $1,000.
